Invited Speaker:
Dave Wall, The Physics of Magic and Vice-Versa
This Presentation opens with a classic magical effect, the linking of rings, modified to illustrate certain features of Maxwell's equations as developed after Maxwell's death. Although no great secrets of magic will be revealed, physical principles behind illusions done with smoke and mirrors will be discussed. Pepper's Ghost, the prototype of all such illusions, will be presented as a physics demonstration. The Sphinx, first done two years later in 1865, will be described. Then two standard physics demonstratins will be presented dressed up as magic tricks. The closing effect is a cut-and-restored rope routine actually used by the author in his phiysics classes each semester to illustrate the differences betweeen vector space and real space.

You can sign-up for the banquet when you register for the meeting. The cost is $15.50 per person.
