The Future of Land-Based Strategic Missiles, co-edited by Barbara G. Levi, Mark Sakitt, and Art Hobson (American Institute of Physics, NY, 1989). An arms-control study by ten members of the American Physical Society’s Forum on Physics and Society, on the pros and cons of different strategic missile options. I wrote four of the chapters, on the Minuteman/MX intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) system, a proposal to eliminate ICBMs, mobile ICBMs, and extremely reinforced missile silos. Other chapter topics include the stability of nuclear forces, verification of limitations on land-based missiles, and command and control of land-mobile missiles. Physics and Human Affairs (John Wiley, NY, 1982). Precursor of Physics: Concepts and Connections, used at U. Arkansas and several other campuses during 1982-94. Concepts in Statistical Mechanics (Gordon and Breach, NY, 1971). Research monograph on the application of information theory to the foundations of statistical mechanics. Topics include probablity and information theory, foundations of classical and quantum statistical mechanics, the second law of thermodynamics, irreversibility in classical and quantum statistical mechanics, a generalized entropy and generalized second law for nonequilibrium systems, and simple exact examples to illustrate the principles.
