Dietzgen Theodolite
This instrument measures both horizontal and vertical angles and is most commonly used in surveying, though it has found use in engineering and rocket launch technology. Most likely built in the 1970’s, this theodolite carried a price tag of about $1000 at the time ($3500 in 2007 currency) due to its fine precision.
Fairchild Sextant
Fairchild A-10A Sextant (or Bubble Sextant) was used in this department during WWII when it hosted the United States Army Air Corps training program. The Army Air Corps volunteers came to the University in 1943 and when the department got military funding, they spent it on educational and training equipment for the group of 500 plus students awaiting the Army Specialized Training Program.
